Breaking Through

Quote #1: "Yes," I responded, Wiping my tears and looking down at his large, black shinny boots. At that pint I were someone else, someone with a different name. My teacher had a sad and pained look in her eyes. I followed the immigration officer out of the classroom and into his car marked BORDER PATROL.

I chose this quote because it shows the hardships that the character faced during is time in the US. It shows that one of the main fears where the Border Patrol because if they were caught then they would be deported all the way back to were they came from. And when Francisco got caught he was really sad and the second he saw the teacher come up and tell the Border Patrol who he was Francisco knew he was caught.

Question#1: What do you think was going through Francisco's head when he was in the Border Patrol's car?

Quote#2: I longed for the taste of home cooking, especially flour tortillas, Frijoles de la olla, and carne con chile.

I chose this because it shows how the character maintained his culture while still living in America. He did this by still eating all of the foods native to his home country like flour tortillas, Frijoles de la olla, and carne con chile. this also shows that Francisco really loves keeping up with his culture and not letting it slip away like when it said I longed for the taste of home cooking, this really shows that he loves his culture and its foods even when he is in the US.

Question#2: Would you keep your culture if you moved to an different country or would you adopt the new countries culture?
